MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Elmore Nickelberry, a civil rights icon who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for higher pay and better working conditions for sanitation workers, has died at the age of 92, according to his family.

According to Nickelberry’s son, Terrence Nickleberry, his father’s cancer returned, and he went into the hospital around Thanksgiving with fluid on his lungs. Soon after, he was placed in hospice.

A 20-year-old man sitting inside a vehicle was shot and killed on the Upper East Side on Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported in front of 134 E. 95th Street just before 2:15 p.m.

Police say the victim was sitting in a passenger seat when he was approached by the gunman.

He was shot once in the stomach. The victim was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead less than half an hour later.

The suspect left the scene in a white sedan.

The investigation is ongoing.

A Newark man was killed and a woman was wounded in a double shooting in Newark’s Central Ward tonight, authorities confirmed.

According to Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio, the shooting occurred near the corner of Sussex Avenue and Hudson Street this evening.
