A 21-year-old woman was shot and killed in East Orange Monday night, authorities said.

EAST ORANGE — A city woman was shot and killed while sitting in her car on North Maple Avenue last night, authorities said.

Tyeshia Obie, 21, was found suffering from a gun shot wound in the vehicle parked along the 200 block of North Maple Avenue at around 8:39 p.m., Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray and East Orange Police Chief William C. Robinson said in a joint statement.

She was rushed to University Hospital in Newark, where she was pronounced dead approximately 30 minutes later.

No arrests have been made, and police have not identified any motive or potential suspects. An investigation by the prosecutor’s office’s Major Crimes and Homicide Task Force remains underway.

The murder is the first of the new year for East Orange, which recorded only two homicides during all of 2014.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the task force’s tips line at (877) TIPS-4-EC or (877) 847-7432.
