Lottery winner collected $5million with wife and girlfriend in arm but was left penniless

Posted by Liam Buckler on Sunday, September 17, 2023 Under: 848FINACE
Curtis Sharp Jr. joins his wife, Barbara and girlfriend Jacqueline Bernabela to collect the winnings

Sharpe gave money to friends and family and even wrote a check for $15,000 to help victims of the Ethiopian famine. The one married man spent money on divorces, and cars, and gave money to slot machines while visiting casinos. "It came in, it went out," Sharp said. "I don't have one penny left of that." Shape earned $2,600 a month for a social security pension. However, he’s still free-hearted with what he has. "If someone needs something, I help out."

The flamboyant winner donated some of his money to charity

Sharp spent his days as a minister at a church in Tennessee. As for the money he wasted, Sharp doesn’t seem to be bothered by it. "It didn't work out. But it's OK," God has blessed me. I am doing good.” The lottery winner passed away at 82-years-old in 2020 in Nashville.

Sharp isn’t the first lottery winner to blow through money. Evelyn Adams, who won the New Jersey lottery twice, in 1985 and 1986, for a total of $5.4 million, is barely making ends meet. She allegedly wasted her money by gambling and being free-hearted. “Honey, I’m the type of person who would give people the shirt off my back — and that’s what happened,” she said in 2004. According to her daughter, Traci, she is living in a trailer in New Jersey. “She’s good. She’s alive, she’s in good health,” Traci said.

He went onto appear in lotto commercials

Some winners were even less fortunate including William “Bud” Post III who won a $16.2 million Pennsylvania lottery jackpot in 1988. He died alone in 2006 at the age of 66 from poor health and had been living off food stamps at the time. Shockingly, his brother at the time tried to allegedly murder him in order to try and inherit his huge lotto winnings.
