Named Forbes Africa Magazine’s top model of 2013, Maria Borges has taken the fashion world by storm since her raise in 2010. The Angolan born model has since graced the runways of Givenchy, Moschino, Victoria Secret and countless others in her five year career. It didn’t take long for her to enter and win the ELLE Canada Model Search in 2005 that catapulted her career to what it is today. From Eritrean decent, this model first landed her big break in Trey Songz, Invented Sex, music video which caught the eyes of many. Now in almost a decade of her career, Mahary has walked the runways of Victoria Secret, Chanel, Alexander Wang and countless other haute couture designers from Milan to Paris.

Another Toronto native, Senait Gidey is quickly making a name for herself in the fashion community at the young age of 19. First making her fashion debut at the age of 16 by signing with Elmer Olsen Model Managment in Toronto, Senait has thus far modeled for Balmain, Ralph Lauren, and Burberry, and has been featured in fashion editorials such as Harpers Bazar UK and Vogue Italia.  Being the only black model in Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel Fall/Winter 2013 presentation sparks a fire for the bright eyed model as she looks up to fellow East African super models such as Liya Kibede and Iman Abdulmajid as being inspirations for her growing career.

From always being stopped by passerby’s in her home town of Bronx, New York, Forrest is familiar with attention. Being teased and being called “Casper” because of her Albinism was hard growing up for the 25 year-old model, but she later channeled her differences by embracing her uniqueness and putting it into print and on screen. Having walked for Jean Paul Gautier and Vivienne Westwood, and gracing an editorial feature in the 2010 May issue of Glamour Magazine, the African American, fair skinned model continues to break down barriers in the fashion world and society.

8. Ajak Deng

Closely resembling model icon Alek Wek, Ajak Deng is a model all on her own. The Sudanese born, Melbourne-raised model comes from a past of pain yet triumph. Fleeing from her origin of Sudan during the Sudanese war, and losing her mother to malaria at the age of 12, Deng and her 6 siblings took refuge in Australia where the soon-to-be model developed her craft. Knowing that she should put her 6ft stature to good use, Deng knew that modeling would not only aid in her career, but her family as well. Being noted in walking for Louis Vuitton and Chanel, and gracing campaigns for Top Shop, KENZO, Kate Spade, and Calvin Klein, the well-established model still faces racial issues in the fashion industry that she consistently fights to break.

10. Binx Walton
