      14 people rescued after 6 hours trapped in Atlantic City casino elevator

      ATLANTIC CITY -- Firefighters rescued 14 people trapped for more than six hours in an elevator at the Tropicana Casino & Resort early Sunday by pulling them 100 feet by ropes to safety, authorities said.

      Firefighters were called at about 1 a.m. after the elevator became stuck and efforts to get it working again were unsuccessful, the fire department's union said in a Facebook post.

      The elevator was stuck between the sixth and seventh floors, and the next opening was at the 15th floor, according to CBS in Philadelphia.

      The firefighters used a rope and harness system to pull each of the 14 elevator passengers from the car. The process took several hours as a firefighter was lowered into the elevator shaft to retrieve the passengers, officials said.

      The last person was rescued at about 6:30 a.m. and no injuries were reported.

      On 5/20/17 ACFD responded to the Tropicana Hotel/Casino for a reported stuck elevator with occupants who have been trapped for several hours. Upon arrival it was determined that 14 individuals were stuck in a 'blind shaft' elevator. ACFD special operations used a rope rescue and haul system to haul the 14 trapped occupants over 100 feet to safety.
