      After 3 fatal crashes, Camden County has had enough of people who ride ATVs on public streets

      Camden Introduces Bill To Crack Down On Illegal Dirt Bike, ATV Ridin

      Camden County police are cracking down on people who illegally ride their ATVs through city streets, saying the problem has grown since last year and that members of the public are in danger.

      “The groups (of riders) are growing and growing,” police Lt. Zsakhiem James said Wednesday. “Some days you see four or five riding together. Other days there might be 20 to 30.”

      On Tuesday, chaos broke out at a funeral for David Rivera, 34, a rider from Camden who died June 3 when he crashed into a tractor-trailer rig. Many of the mourners showed up to pay their respects on ATVs and dirt bikes, according to 6abc.com.

      In 2018, Camden County saw 10 ATV crashes – three of them fatal. This year, there have been eight ATV crashes with several riders taken to hospitals in critical condition, James said.

      It’s not illegal for people to own ATVs. However, riding the off-road vehicles on public streets is against the law just about everywhere, James said.

      “We want people to report this to us anonymously using the Stop It app,” James said. “It's on the Google Play store, it's on the App Store for your iPhone. The access code is Camden NJ."

      Camden County Mayor Frank Moran and State Sen. Nilsa Cruz-Perez, along with police and other leaders, held a May 31 press conference to announce support for a new bill that would enhance penalties for anyone caught illegally riding an off-road vehicle in New Jersey.

      The measure would fine those who break the law up to $1,000 and seize their ATVs for up to seven days.

      James pointed out that there are legal areas to ride ATVs in New Jersey. “They (the riders) can look online,” James said. “But it’s illegal to operate them on city streets.”
