The 37-year-old
victim, identified by sources as Oliver D'Orio, was involved in a
quarrel outside a bodega after trying to get customers to buy him a
beer. When he was slapped to the ground by a man with whom he had
argued, he hit his head on the sidewalk, lost consciousness and later
died.
Police say this man is suspected in the Friday death of a man in the Bronx following a quarrel.
An Italian man visiting New York died Friday after a powerful slap from
a stranger whom he had pestered to buy him a beer spilled him onto the
sidewalk and he struck his head.
The 37-year-old Italian's death was classified as a homicide, and
police are hunting for a crazy-haired suspect seen on surveillance video
at a Bronx bodega where the two crossed paths.
The dead man, identified by sources as Oliver D'Orio, lived in
Switzerland and was in New York to see his girlfriend, cops said. He had
been in town only 10 days before his freak death, police sources said.
D'Orio appeared drunk and was belligerent when he entered the Guerrero
Deli on Washington Ave. near the corner of E. 185th St. in the Belmont
section shortly after midnight, the sources said. Holding a banana,
D'Orio tried to convince customers, including the suspect, to buy him
some booze, police and witnesses said.
Rebuffed, D'Orio walked out of the store and argued with the suspect;
he then walked off unsteadily. Moments later, as the suspect watched
warily, D'Orio took off his blue-and-white-striped polo shirt, and
returned, apparently to challenge the man.
The suspect responded by landing a hard slap that caused D'Orio to fall backward to the ground, hitting his head as he landed.
According to police, this person was seen slapping a man early Friday
outside a bodega in the Bronx. That slap led to the victim's falling and
hitting his head, which killed him, cops say.
The suspect dashed off.
D'Orio lost consciousness. He rushed by ambulance to nearby St.
Barnabas Hospital, where he died of the head wound, officials said.
Police released surveillance images on Friday that show the suspect
smiling outside the deli. He was wearing a white tank top, and had
star-shaped tattoos on each shoulder.
