      Man killed in crash while driving stolen car also had a stolen safe, North Plainfield police say

      NORTH PLAINFIELD — The man killed on Route 22 driving a car stolen out of Newark has been identified, and was transporting a safe stolen during an earlier burglary, North Plainfield Police said.

      After the estranged wife of the driver was located and advised, police identified Jose Cardona, 44, whose last known address was in Newark, as the man killed in the Dec. 27 car crash on Route 22 at Watchung Avenue, according to a statement from North Plainfield Police Chief William G. Parenti.

      At 11:03 p.m. on Dec. 27, a police officer observed a vehicle improperly passing another vehicle while traveling at a high rate of speed on Watchung Avenue, Parenti previously said.

      The officer then notified headquarters of his intention to stop the car and, when he activated his overhead lights, the vehicle accelerated and struck the barrier dividing the eastbound and westbound lanes of Route 22, the chief previously said.

      Cardona was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. at the scene by paramedics from JFK Medical Center, according to the unattended death report filed by police.

      Parenti said the vehicle, a silver 2004 Honda Civic, was reported stolen out of Newark. No other vehicles or people were involved in the crash, he said.

      A floor-type safe determined to have been stolen in an earlier South Plainfield burglary was recovered in the vehicle, Parenti said. The safe, which felt empty, was turned over unopened to South Plainfield Police for their investigation, Parenti said.

      "There were no other people involved, and there will be no charges forthcoming as a result of the North Plainfield incident," Parenti said.

      North Plainfield Police and the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team were assisted at the scene by the North Plainfield Fire Department and the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Parenti said.
