      MMA fighter missing for almost two years found dead

      An amateur MMA fighter who vanished from a Missouri hotel he was staying at with friends in February 2020 was found dead in the woods by a man searching for deer antlers.

      Remains found in the woods in Branson, Miss., last week have been identified as 25-year-old David Koenig, police announced Monday, bringing to close a nearly two-year search.

      “Our department and the amazing group of volunteers never stopped in our efforts to find Mr. Koenig,” Branson Police Chief Jeff Matthews said in a statement. “While this is not the ending we hoped for, we offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Koenig.”

      Koenig left the Peach Tree Inn in Branson on Feb. 8, 2020 and texted friends that night asking for help, thinking he might be in danger, his mother told the Branson Tri-Lakes News. He was reported missing in March, delayed because friends and family said he sometimes went off the grid and failed to tell anyone.

      “Dave has battled addiction for many years on and off,” his mom, Tracy, told the newspaper. “It wasn’t uncommon for him to go off somewhere and not communicate with us for days and even weeks. We really thought at first it was exactly what he was doing.”

      A cause of death was not announced but officials said there was no trauma and that it did not appear to be the result of foul play.

      Tracy Koenig pleaded online for people to stop spreading rumors about her son’s death, including that he had been robbed.

      “Nobody killed Dave. Nobody!” she wrote on Facebook Monday. “He left the Peachtree on foot and never made it home. Why he was in distress, and why he walked through the deep woods…..we most likely will never know. But he is GONE.

      “Big Dave is finally at peace.”
