Mother of teen gunned down by Florida deputy is shot at son’s funeral
The mother of a teen who’d been gunned down two weeks ago by a sheriff’s deputy in Florida was herself shot during her son’s burial service Saturday.
Initial reports were that someone had fired into the crowd mourning 18-year-old Sincere Pierce, who along with 16-year-old Angelo Crooms had been killed Nov. 13 by a Brevard County Sheriff’s deputy.
Police later told WKMG-TV that the shot was in fact an accidental discharge from a firearm carried by a 16-year-old at the service. It penetrated the teen’s leg, then hit Pierce’s leg, deputies told WKMG.
Goodyear said the teenager, whose name has not been released, had also been injured Saturday, saying "the round penetrated and exited his leg prior to impacting Quasheda Pierce's leg."
He added that neither of the injuries appear to be life threatening.
According to Florida Today, people heard a gunshot break out as attendees placed flowers on the casket of Pierce's 18-year-old son, Sincere Pierce.
Moments later, attendees were seen fleeing the cemetery. Brevard County Sheriff's Office deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived shortly after.
The Hill has reached out to the sheriff's office for comment.
The shooting comes after the police killing of Sincere Pierce and 16-year-old Angelo Crooms, which sparked local protests earlier this month.
At the time, the local sheriff's office said two of its deputies, Jafet Santiago-Miranda and Carson Hendren, had been "attempting to conduct a follow-up investigation on what they believed was a possible stolen car." The office said the car had also fled from another deputy in the area.
The office, which has also released dashcam footage from the shooting, said the deputies attempted to stop the vehicle, which they said was being driven by the teens.
"Deputy Santiago-Miranda gives repeated verbal commands, 7 to be exact, for the driver of the vehicle to stop the car, however, the driver of the vehicle, 16 year old Angelo Crooms turns and accelerates the vehicle towards Deputy Santiago-Miranda," the office said.
The office claimed Santiago-Miranda was "forced to fire his service weapon" in self-defense.
An investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
