NEWARK — The third teenager shot on a South Ward street on Christmas night died early this morning in the hospital, authorities said,

Abdul Frazier, 14, was one of the three teenagers shot on Schley Street. He has spent the past three weeks at University Hospital where he died at 4:57 a.m. today, said Thomas Fennelly, the chief assistant Essex County Prosecutor.

The first two victims of the shooting, 13-year-old Zainee Hailey and 15-year-old Kasson Morman, died shortly after the attack, authorities said. But Frazier survived with a critical wound to his neck, family members have said – and was listed in critical condition at University Hospital since Dec. 25.

A 15-year-old was arrested and charged with two counts of murder, among other charges, authorities announced at a press conference on Dec. 31. The alleged killer felt "disrespected" after one of the boys apparently "hit on" the shooter's girlfriend, law enforcement sources have said.

An autopsy on Frazier will be performed today, Fennelly said.

An attempted murder charge against the accused juvenile shooter is expected to be upgraded to another count of murder, the prosecutor added. The shooter remains at the Essex County Youth Detention Facility.

The additional death in the rash of holiday killings was devastating to some in the community. Frazier was the student of Bashir Akinyele, a history teacher at Weequahic High School and a member of the Newark Anti-Violence Coalition.

"It's a really sad moment right now. I cannot teach... I cannot teach right now," Akinyele said.

The death of Frazier, who went by the nickname "Scooter" has left many of his students "distraught" this morning, the teacher added.

Hailey, the 13-year-old girl killed in the same attack, was taking out her family’s trash to the curbside at the time the shots rang out, authorities have said. She was an “innocent bystander,” they said.

The Schley Street killings – and three shooting deaths outside an Irvington go-go bar earlier on Christmas – led to demonstrations calling for an end to the urban violence in the greater Newark area.
