NEWARK — A man wanted on numerous warrants led police on a high-speed chase Thursday night.
The man was also awaiting a trial on prior drug-dealing and weapons
charges – and had been out of jail after making bail several months ago,
authorities said.
Fareed Norman, 35, was pulled over in a black Audi at 7 p.m. near
Jersey and 14th streets in Jersey City, a few blocks west of the Holland
Tunnel, said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New
York and New Jersey.
The license plate of the car, which was not owned by Norman, came up
flagged with an active warrant, Pentangelo said. But as the Port
Authority officer continued to investigate the car and its driver,
Norman allegedly put the car in drive and sped off, authorities claimed.
The Port Authority officer followed closely behind – and during the
pursuit, Norman allegedly sideswiped another car, and later the Audi got
a flat tire, Pentangelo said. But Norman drove west nine miles,
eventually taking Exit 55 into Newark, authorities said.
The Audi allegedly came to stop shortly after the ramp and Norman ran
from the car east toward Fabyan Place, police said. He was chased down
and arrested by Port Authority police and state troopers, Pentangelo
added.
A database search turned up a suspended driver’s license and numerous
local warrants from Irvington and Newark totaling $3,100, Pentangelo
said. The child-support warrant was issued by the FBI’s National Crime
Information Center, he added.
Norman was charged with eluding, reckless endangerment, and jumping bail, Pentangelo said.
Norman was also arrested in July by the State Police,
Pentangelo confirmed. Norman was carrying about $16,000 in heroin,
about $18,000 in cash, and a handgun at the time of that arrest, state
troopers said at the time. He was charged with drug possession, intent
to distribute, and weapons possession, among other charges. His bail was
set at $175,000 cash.
Norman posted that amount through a local bail bondsman on Aug. 23,
and was released two days later after settling traffic warrants out of
Newark and Galloway Township, said Anthony Puglisi, an Essex County
spokesman. The Newark-based bail-bondsman declined comment when reached
by phone.
Norman is now currently being held in the Hudson County Jail, Pentangelo said.
