      Newark man convicted of murder in May 2011 killing of Irvington man

      NEWARK — An Irvington man has been convicted of murder and other charges for the May 2011 killing of a Newark man, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said this afternoon.

      Andre Mells, 29, faces 30 years to life for the shooting and killing of Idris Denmark, 27, when he is sentenced next month, the statement said.

      Denmark was shot 10 times with two guns around 4:30 p.m. on May 29, 2011 in New Hope Village on Norfolk Street, according to Assistant Prosecutor Portia Downing, who tried the case. Denmark’s shooting death was the last killing during an especially bloody six-day span in the city that left five people dead and 12 others wounded by gunfire.

      A jury also found Mells guilty of possessing a weapon by a convicted felon, for which he faces another 10 years, the statement said. That offense was only presented to the jury after it found him guilty of a committing a crime with a gun, the statement said.

      Mells’ record lists 15 arrests and two prior felony convictions including, in 2003, for aggravated assault and, in 2005, of unlawful possession of a weapon, the statement said.

      Downing credited the testimony of residents for helping to convict Mells.

      “This was a brazen shooting in broad daylight in a heavily populated area,” she said in the statement. “We were successful in the prosecution of this case because of the assistance of people in the community who willingly came forward and testified. Without their bravery and cooperation it would have been a very difficult case to prosecute.”

      Mells’ sentencing is scheduled for Feb. 28.
