NEWARK — A Newark man will serve at least 32 years in prison for the carjacking and subsequent sexual assault of a 21-year-old woman at the South Orange train station in 2011, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement this afternoon.

Isaiah L. Greene, 24, was convicted of first-degree carjacking, robbery, criminal restraint and aggravated sexual contact after a six-day trial in April.

He was sentenced to 40 years by Superior Court Michael Ravin today after Assistant Prosecutor Brian Matthews recommended a 50-year prison term, saying Greene had “repeatedly demonstrated that he is unwilling to live by the rules of society,” according to the statement.

Greene already had a lengthy record, including seven adjudications as a juvenile, according to the prosecutor's office. Matthews also noted that Greene had three felony convictions as an adult prior to this case.

“Every time he has been given a chance, he shows he is unable to conform his behavior to the standards of society,’’ Matthews said in the statement. “He must be incarcerated to protect the public.’’

On Dec. 10, 2011 at about 2 p.m., the victim, from Orange, was getting into her car at the train station when Greene approached. He indicated he was carrying a gun in his pocket and demanded her valuables, authorities said.

She handed over an iPhone as well as cash. He then got in the passenger seat and commanded her to drive. As she did, he fondled her breast and also put his hands in her pants, authorities said.

About two miles away, near Vailsburg Park in Newark, she spotted a sheriff’s cruiser, deliberately rammed into it and jumped out. Greene fled but was apprehended about four hours later.

He has been jailed since the incident. Greene received 776 days credit for time served.
