      Newark police, acting on a resident's tip, arrest city man, confiscate 4 handguns

      NEWARK — A tip to Newark police from a resident led to the arrest of a city man on weapons charges and the recovery of four handguns earlier today, Newark police said in a statement this evening.

      After being told that a man was dealing guns out of his Summit Avenue home and getting a description of him and his car, detectives from the department’s fugitive apprehension section headed to the neighborhood, spotted the vehicle and stopped the driver. During the subsequent search, detectives located a loaded and defaced 9mm Jennings handgun, the statement said.

      The driver, Timothy Brantley, 49, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a defaced firearm, police said.

      Police then secured a search warrant, searched Brantley’s Summit Avenue apartment and found a .44-caliber Remington, a .22-caliber Sturm Ruger and a .380-caliber Lorcin as well as hollow-point bullets, the statement said.

      Police said Brantley faces several additional weapons counts stemming from the guns recovered in his apartment, police said.

      In the statement, Police Director Samuel DeMaio called police’s partnership with residents one of the department’s “greatest assets” in combating crime.

      “The recovery of all these illegal handguns is from the direct result of the community alerting the police department of unlawful activity,” he said.
