      Newark supermarket owner accused of unloading $6K of stolen meat

      NEWARK — A theft of $6,500 worth of meat led to the arrest of a supermarket owner for receiving stolen property on Wednesday night, police said.

      Francisco Almanzar, of East Orange, was arrested while he was allegedly unloading the boxed products into his store on the 700-block of Broadway, said detective Carmen Rivera.

      A van loaded with the meat had been reported stolen out of Elizabeth by the Magnolia Beef Company, said Rivera.

      The Newark police received a call from the Magnolia manager at 10:15 p.m. directing officers to the 100-block of Lincoln Avenue, Rivera said. The manager had traced the stolen van to that location using a GPS system installed on the vehicle, she added.

      The manager told the Newark officers he had seen several suspects unloading the meat into a blue van, Rivera said. Shortly thereafter, detectives found the blue van – and Almanzar unloading the meat into his store, the detective added.

      Almanzar was arrested without incident and charged with receiving stolen property, police said. The investigation continues.

      “I commend the officers involved for their hard work and alertness, which resulted in the arrest of ths individual and the recovery of all the stolen merchandise,” said Sheilah Coley, Newark’s acting police director.
