Reputed Bloods gang leader gets life for ambush execution outside nightclub

A reputed leader in the Bloods gang with a violent rap sheet was sentenced to life in prison, plus ten years, in the ambush-style execution of a man outside a Newark nightclub, prosecutors said Friday.
An Essex County jury in November 2018 convicted Naim “Stackz-Strafford” Jones of conspiracy to commit murder and weapons offenses in the slaying of 23-year-old William Porter, IV.
Superior Court James W. Donohue imposed the sentence Thursday on Jones for his role in orchestrating the fatal shooting. Jones, prosecutors say, is the reputed “Godfather” of the “Red Breed Guerillas” set.
Jones, 42, has prior convictions stemming from a double homicide in 2014, according to officials.

The victim was shot multiple times in the face and neck outside a Newark nightclub.
“Naim Jones’ heinous record of unrepentant violence, and role as a leader of violent street gangs left no reasonable alternative but to seek a life sentence for this, the third life he has been convicted of taking,’’ said Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Adam Wells, who tried the case.
Porter was gunned down April 21, 2017 around 2:30 a.m. as he left a nightclub on Mulberry Street, near Oliver, in the city’s Central Ward. He was shot eight times, including six times to the face and neck.
Prosecutors argued the killing was carefully staged by Jones and two other men. Jurors convicted Jones along with Hakeem “Hakaveli - The Don” Maloney, 38, of Irvington, of conspiracy to commit murder in the attack.
The shooter, Rashon “Numnutz” Jackson, 31, of Irvington, was also convicted on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder and weapons offenses. A longtime so-called “soldier” in the Bloods, prosecutors maintained he killed Porter under orders from Jones.
At trial Wells told jurors surveillance cameras captured the trio at the club before the shooting and showed Jackson opening fire at Porter, a member of the Grape Street Crips.
Authorities have said the violent “Red Breed Guerillas” set of the Bloods controlled heroin and crack distribution near Stratford Place and the Grace West Manor homes in Newark.
Jackson and Maloney were previously sentenced in Porter’s murder. Jackson must serve a minimum 63 years and nine months of his life term before being eligible for parole. For his part, Maloney was sentenced to a 70 year prison term and must serve 52 years and six months behind bars before being eligible for parole.
