      Short Hills mall parking deck partially collapses, no injuries reported

      MILLBURN — A section of a one-level parking deck at The Mall At Short Hills collapsed in the pre-dawn hours this morning.

      No one was injured and additional property was not damaged, mall general manager Michael McAvinue said.

      The collapse was reported around 5:10 this morning, outside of the Bloomingdale's near John F. Kennedy Parkway, he said. A contracted snow removal worker who was a distance away from the parking deck "heard a noise" and went over and discovered the damage, according to McAvinue. Mall security also spotted the collapse and reported it to management, he said.

      The affected area is about 15 parking spaces in the upper left corner of a roughly 300-spot single-level deck, McAvinue said.

      "Obviously with the snow and rain, it probably played a factor," he said. He acknowledged that snow was piled in the corner but added, "I don't want to jump to that conclusion yet," regarding what caused the deck to crumble.

      Millburn firefighters and the township building department responded to the scene. The parking deck is currently closed off and under inspection by both town and mall engineers to determine the cause of the collapse, McAvinue said.

      "There were no injuries or other property damage to cars or equipment. Our number one priority is the safety of our customers," he said.
