ATLANTIC CITY -- Firefighters rescued 14 people trapped for more than six hours in an elevator at the Tropicana Casino & Resort early Sunday by pulling them 100 feet by ropes to safety, authorities said.

Firefighters were called at about 1 a.m. after the elevator became stuck and efforts to get it working again were unsuccessful, the fire department's union said in a Facebook post.

BRIDGETON — Police are investigating whether Wednesday's fatal shooting on Spruce Street is related to another shooting earlier this week.

The fatal shooting occurred Wednesday at 8:45 a.m. on the 200 block of Spruce Street. Police were flagged down and directed toward a backyard where they found the body of 25-year-old Dehaven Jackson.

Jackson was lying face down and died from a gunshot wound. Police found shell casings nearby.

NEWARK — A Newark police officer was charged with sexually assaulting a young girl, an Essex County Prosecutor's Office spokeswoman confirmed Wednesday.

Manny Marques, 36, of West Caldwell, was arrested Sept. 10 on a charge of first degree aggravated sexual assault of the girl and third degree child endangerment, according to prosecutor's office spokeswoman Katherine Carter.

Marques was not charged with any offenses related to his work as an officer, Carter added.
