The victim refused and fled the scene when he saw two other men approaching from behind, police said.
The three men proceeded to follow the victim, eventually catching up with him in front of an apartment complex on Morris Avenue, according to officials, where one of the unknown men displayed a handgun and demanded his property.
The victim complied and handed over $950 in cash and a bag containing a pair of boots and a hat, authorities said.
The thieves fled the scene on foot. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
The suspects are all described as Hispanic men between the ages of 20 and 40.
The first suspect was last seen wearing a light blue hat, a dark-colored coat, gray sweatpants and sneakers. The second wore a black hat, a red jacket, black pants and white sneakers. The final suspect was dressed in a gray hooded sweater, blue jeans and black sneakers.
