TRENTON — The Trenton man accused in two killings at least five armed robberies in a four-month span "was a terror and was spiraling out of control" before authorities arrested him in October, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Authorities are still trying to determine if Randy Kareem Washington, 33, is responsible for additional crimes before or during the alleged spree of violence, said Mercer County Assistant Prosecutor Stacey Geurds.
“Obviously he was escalating,” Geurds said during a bail hearing Tuesday.
Washington was arrested Oct. 29 shortly after he allegedly shot Silas Johnson Jr., 64, to death near the Trenton Train Station, authorities said.
Geurds said Washington stalked Johnson on a NJ Transit River Line train before gunning him down under a Route 1 overpass as Johnson walked from the train station. Just before the killing, Washington confronted Johnson and accused him of sexually assaulting a member of his family, Geurds said.
Geurds said the two men knew each other, but declined to be more specific.
Shell casings found at the scene of the killing linked Washington to the July 30 shooting death of George Jamison, 43, of Pennington, during a robbery.
Jamison was sitting on a bus-stop bench in front of 18-20 North Broad Street when Washington attempted to rob him at gunpoint, authorities said. Jamison was shot in the back and pronounced dead a short time later at the hospital.
Assistant Prosecutor Al Garcia said the robbery and killing were captured by video surveillance.
Prosecutors said eyewitness accounts and additional evidence linked Washington to five armed robberies in the city on July 13, July 23, Oct. 16, and two on Oct. 17. Washington wounded a third victim during one of the robberies, Geurds said.
Washington, who was appearing via video from the Mercer County Correctional Center, did not speak during the hearing apart from confirming his name and sat at times with his eyes downcast.
Judge Robert Billmeier maintained Washington’s combined bails for the two murders at $2 million. There is an additional $100,000 full cash bail for resisting arrest, criminal trespass and obstructing the administration of law.
